VINYL (tales from the vienna underground)
INSTALLATION (78min loop) by a. c. standen-raz

this installation project is an experimental "cutup" of an unreleased full length documentary film which was shot over two years in vienna. the original film goes under the skin of the city to capture its entire contemporary music culture, through discussions with locally based artists on the nature of sound, and what it means to create music in this unique space.

the installation derived from the film is intended to give the viewer a new deconstructed way of experiencing a movie. at any time in vienna, thousands of disconnected events occur at the same time – a cacophony of sounds and images that we cannot possibly experience at the same moment, but which still enter our collective consciousness and memories.

this installation is an attempt to represent that reality. three separate beamed video streams – interviews, city scenes & stage performances – are looped several times, while the original 78min audio track runs as normal. the effect of watching three simultaneous video streams is at times disorienting, but a rhythm develops out of this chaos that reflects the underlying chaos of every day life.

the original film will be complete this year and shown in vienna as a "normal" movie by autumn 2010.
